November 2009

The results from the Sunderland European Open have now been published and they shows a fantastic performance from the Newcastle Magpies YBC participants. In the Bantam boys handicap category Charlie Martin came out top with an enormous 722 and, in partnership with Louise Whittle the duo won the Bantam doubles, handicap division. Also in the Bantam girls Louise Whittle, back to form, gained fourth place with handicap.

David Burtle bowled a 590 scratch series in the Senior boys which earned him 2nd place but also put him in first place on handicap. David’s scores included a 234 game which David is quite capable of bowling although not in every game he bowls. Also in the Senior division of the handicap doubles Jordan Sargeant and Josh Summers came second. This is an unbelievable performance as Josh who should have bowled in the Bantam division was bowling in an age group two divisions higher due to lack of partners in his own division. Jordan averaged 174 during the day including 3 200’s. In the all events Josh Summers came out 6th scratch which is a great achievement and not far from a medal position.

New girls Aliya Diorova and Sarah Sewell came out a very creditable fourth in the Senior doubles handicap division out of 63 doubles teams which is a tremendous achievement considering that they only started bowling at the beginning of July this year as raw beginners. That deserves a little skip, Aliya.

In the intermediate boys handicap singles Andrew Wells was placed fourth out of 62. Bearing in mind that the Sunderland European Open is one of the best junior ten pin bowling competitions of the year and was attended by hundreds of bowlers including most of the best bowlers in the UK over 4 weekends, the Newcastle team were magnificent and all deserve many congratulations.

In the doubles league at the half way point Stephen Thompson leads the field closely followed by Sarah Sewell in second and Thomas Crow in third place.

Two dates for the diary, the annual away Hartlepool match is on 21st November 2009 and the Morrisons bagpack is on 19th December 2009. A hearty well done to Chairman Keith Burtle for negotiating the bagpack agreement, this is great news for the Club and the Club’s finances.

The start of October has seen an amazing set of results from Thomas Crow. Not only has he bowled the highest ever game recorded in the Newcastle Magpies YBC of 243 but also the highest series ever of 579. Over 6 games this month Tom has averaged 183. Tom also bowled extremely well in September averaging 173 and taking the bowler of the month award by a considerable margin. Well done Tom, long may your form continue.

The singles league has started well with Stephen Thompson leading the way followed by Tom Crow in second place. Tied for third place is Lucy Whittle and new girl Sarah Sewell who is making her mark on the YBC scene. Another new bowler Aliya Dairova is also showing a big improvement. Jamie Martin also continues to improve and is sitting at an impressive fourth in the league.

The YBC is competing in the Sunderland European Open competition next Saturday, 17th October 2009 and good performances are expected from the Newcastle bowlers. The Hartlepool match has been fixed for the 21st November at Hartlepool.

Amazingly the winners of the 2009 Spring Doubles League were only decided by the last frame of the last game of the season. In the position round, the leaders, Andrew Wells and Tom Crow (Copper Heads) played the second team of Jordan Sargeant and Michael Cowley knowing that they only needed one point from the game. With Michael Cowley absent due to a wedding attendance things looked good for Andrew and Tom.

In the first game Jordan bowled above average to take the two points. No need to panic except Jordan did the same thing again in the second game leaving Andrew and Tom to at least draw the final game. Approaching the end of the game Jordan just had the edge but Andrew threw two cracking strikes in the eighth and ninth frames to set up a win which was confirmed in the final frame when Andrew spared and Jordan opened.

Well done to Andrew and Tom who had bowled well all season. Michael and Jordan took second place 6 points behind and David Burtle and Stephen Thompson came third only two points further behind. First, second and third teams will all receive a priceless trophy.

A new Singles league will start in September 2009 but until then there will be a programme of competitions each week. After a two week rest as the league chairman will be spending his holidays improving his health, Thursday training nights will continue with Keith and Dorothy in charge of proceedings.

There have been two excellent results for the club in the past 7 days. Firstly there was an unexpected result in the Washington Singles when Andrew Wells absolutely overpowered the opposition to win the boys title outright. After the first round of 6 games Andrew together with Lucy Whittle went through to a second round of two games. Unfortunately Lucy went out at this point but Andrew due to a good first game qualified for the finals in fourth place. This meant he played the winner of the sixth versus the fifth. Having disposed of this opponent Andrew kept his nerve to beat the third and then to beat Peter Robson from Washington who had finished second and appear in the final against Anthony Sugden of Hartlepool. Andrew gave another good performance to win comfortably. Well done Andrew.

The other excellent result was a team win against Hartlepool in the twice annual match. With all the scores added together the result was Hartlepool 8076, Newcastle 8096 a win of 20 pins. With 15 bowlers each bowling 3 games this is a difference of only approximately 0.5 pins per person per game which shows the importance of not throwing away even a single pin in a game. Well done Team Newcastle. The top Newcastle trios and runners up were Tom Crow, David Burtle and Andrew Wells with Tom averaging 175 for the morning. Jessica Holmes averaged 150 to take the girls high game and Jordan Sargeant won the boys high game with a fine 205 game.

It is back to the doubles league next week which will run until the school holidays.

Eight of our bowlers travelled down to Nottingham for the first entry of the present club into the Junior Nationals. The standard of bowling was much improved compared to other ‘away’ days with David Burtle and Thomas Crow bowling 200 games. Louise Whittle bowled a 141 game which was her highest game ever and her pairing with Josh Summers saw them high up on the leader board. The other bowlers, Stephen Thompson, Jessica Holmes. Lucy Whittle and Andrew Wells are bowled above their average and everyone came back exhausted but much improved for the experience. Louise Whittle continued her excellent bowling with a 159 high game in the league and she is now capable of beating almost any of the other girl bowlers scratch.

Bowler of the month for April went to Tom Crow for the second time this year. Tom averaged 161 for the month and he is still improving. Second in the bowler of the month was new boy Charlie Martin and third was David Burtle who yet again made the top three without winning. Better luck next month David. The doubles league is settling down and the team of Andrew Wells and Tom Crow are leading by two points from Michael Cowley and Jordan Sargeant who are in second place. Close behind in third place are the team of Josh Summers and Louise Whittle. Josh is suffering from a broken finger at the moment so get well soon Josh.

At a committee meeting it was decided to award high series badges for bowlers who have bowled over 500. At the moment there are only four bowlers in that category viz, Thomas Crow (517), David Burtle (517), Jordan Sargeant (530) and Stephen Thompson (501). It is hoped that they can improve to higher series badges and that other bowlers can raise their game to join the 500 club.

The next Hartlepool match at home is expected to take place on either the 6th or 13th June 2009. All league bowlers are selected for this event.

Tom CrowThursday night's coaching session saw a unique performance as Tom Crow bowled an incredible 234 game. This is a fantastic achievement for 14 year old Tom as the majority of senior league bowlers do not bowl a game so high in all their bowling careers. It is the highest score for the present YBC easily beating the previous record of 212 bowled by Jennifer Cowley. After 4 frames Tom struck out to the finish, a fabulous 8 strikes in a row.

Well done Tom it will be a long time before this YBC record will be beaten at Newcastle and there is a good chance it never will. It is a great incentive for other bowlers in the YBC and it shows the benefit of turning up for the coaching sessions for extra practice and a determination to improve.

April 2009

Louise WhittleThe Easter egg competition proved a big success and was well contested throughout. The winner from each set of three lanes (3 bowlers) went through to the semi finals with the best overall loser. On lanes 9 and 10 Katharyn Cowley bowled a solid 157 scratch middle game to edge Lucy Whittle out of first place over the three games with handicap.

On lanes 11 and 12 Katharyn’s brother Michael continued his recent good run of form to beat Josh Summers into second place and go into the final. Lanes 13 and 14 gave the best performances with Tom Crow the winner with a 502 scratch series closely followed by David Burtle who bowled a 500 scratch series. Tom went through to the semi final as the winner of this group while David easily took the overall best loser slot.

In the one game head to head semifinals Tom played David and started with a perfect 5 strike set of frames which guaranteed his victory and sent him through to the final. In the other semi Michael Cowley recovered from a series of splits but was not able to overcome a solid 148 scratch game from Katharyn Cowley who also went through to the final and played Tom. The result was not decided until the last two frames and although both players bowled a 137 scratch game Katharyn took the overall winners prize on handicap. Well done Katharyn.

The head to head matches brought the best out of all the semi finalists and needs to be repeated to increase the competitiveness of the bowlers. The doubles league continues next week and although the Nationals follows on the week after there will be a competition at Newcastle for the bowlers not going to Nottingham.

Congratulations to Louise Whittle who came second in the recent Pee Wee Tournament at Sunderland. Louise is pictured above with her trophy. Well done Louise!

Easter egg bowling ballThree weeks of the doubles have now been bowled and it is very tight at the top. The Copper Heads team (their name, not mine) of Andrew Wells and Thomas Crow are top with 18 points closely followed by the teams of Michael Cowley and Jordan Sargeant, David Burtle and Stephen Thompson and Louise Whittle and Josh Summers all on 16 points. Michael and Jordan also hold the high game with handicap and high series with handicap although the season has just started and any of the other teams can beat those scores if they bowl to their true potential.

Louise Whittle has come close to winning the bowlers of the month trophy several times but this month she has finally achieved the honour as the most improved bowler. May be that new ball is working wonders Louise.

There will be an Easter competition on the 11th April in which a singles competition will be decided by a step ladder final. This should be a good challenge and the winner will need to bowl well throughout the morning.

The Singles league placings were finally decided in the very last week of the league when Lucy Whittle overcame Jordan Sargeant 8-0 to leapfrog to the top which left Lucy as the outright winner. Josh Summers saved his best performance in the league until the final week to beat Jessica Holmes 8-0 and clinch second place. Jordan Sargeant finished in third place whilst Stephen Thompson finished fourth after missing several weeks through injury.

The high game scratch goes to Thomas Crow with a 202 game and Jessica won the high game with handicap with an excellent 259. All the above will receive their trophies within the next two weeks. Thomas Crow had an excellent record in February when he averaged 153 which was an improvement of a massive 28pins above his average and he was the clear bowler of the month. Second place was Lucy Whittle with a 14 pin improvement and third was Stephen Thompson with a 13 pin improvement.

Next week is a beat the champ (or should that be beat the chump) when the supposed adult experts will bowl against the juniors over 3 games viz scratch, 9 no tap and 8 no tap. The following week sees the start of the doubles league which will run up to the school summer holidays.
