Saturday 19th July

The Spring singles League ended this week and it was only decided in the last frame of the last match of the season. Lucy Whittle and Stephen Wells have been neck and neck for first place for most of the season and, coming into the last match, Lucy was four points ahead. Whilst Stephen was taking maximum points from Lucy’s sister Louise after bowling a tremendous 507 series, Lucy was struggling against a very much in form Thomas Ellacott and finished with no points which meant that Stephen triumphed by a slender 4 points. Well done Stephen. With Thomas Crow not able to bowl third place was decided between David and brother Chris Burtle. David held on the take third place. Jennifer Cowley took the high game award with a 212 game and Jordan Sargeant took the high series with a 530 three game series. Presentation of the trophies will take place next Saturday.

Keith Burtle, the YBC chairman announced that there would be a new trophy which will be awarded every December for the Newcastle Magpies YBC Personality of the Year. This will be decided by each bowler having one vote and who will select the bowler who, in their opinion has made the biggest contribution towards the well being of the YBC. In addition yearly trophies will be awarded for the best bowler in the category of under 17 years of age at the beginning of the year, under 15, under 13, under 11 and under 9.

A new league will commence in September 2008 but bowling on Saturday mornings and Thursday nights will continue with competitions.

Next week is the coach and fours match at Washington. All bowlers requiring transport must be at the Newcastle Bowl at 9.30 prompt. In the league Lucy Whittle regained top spot with an 8-0 win with Stephen Wells in second place and David Burtle moves into third place. Andrew Wells bowled his highest league series with three good games totalling 438. Well done Andrew.

A head to head competition was held this week and after 2 games with handicap the winners went on to play each other and the losers played each other. The highlights of the opening rounds were a 201 by Stephen Wells, his first game over 200 in the league and a 115 from new boy Jordan Halbert.

Winners Jordan Sargeant, Stephen Thompson, Steven Calvert, Adam Royal, Stephen Wells, Andrew Wells, David Burtle, Jordan Halbert, and Lewis Calvert went into a one game play off. This resulted in a win for Jordan Halbert in only his first appearance on a Saturday morning. Second place went to Stephen Thompson and third place was taken by Andrew Wells. The winner of the losers was Thomas Ellacott. Well done everybody.

The battle for first place in the singles league continues with Lucy Whittle pulling 2 points clear after her 6-2 win which included scratch games or 151 and 169. Stephen Wells is, however well placed in second place with a 4-4 draw against Jordan Sargeant who started well with a 191 first game (which would have almost certainly have been his first 200 in the league except for a 9 miss in the final frame). Chris Burtle has returned to form this month with a bang and he bowled his league highest score of 205 which will help enormously towards the title of May bowler of the month.

There were two highlights with regard to the younger bowlers. Firstly Steven Calvert beat his previous highest score with a 75 second game but not content to sit on his laurels he improved even further with an 80 final game. Well done Steven, keep using the heavier ball. Secondly it was good to see Louise Whittle return to bowling after an extended rest. She showed that she has lost none of her style and bowled her average with no previous practice. Keep up the good work Louise.

The match against Washington YBC was confirmed for 21st June at Washington. A letter of explanation was handed out and it is necessary to obtain the permission of parents/carers. It would be helpful if parents could provide transport but, if not, arrangements will be made to get all bowlers to Washington. Not to be confused with this match the Washington Singles tournament will take place on the following week June 28/29th. This is open to all YBC’s in the area and Newcastle will certainly be making an entry. More details to be announced.

The long awaited match with Hartlepool took place this week and although there were several excellent Newcastle performances Hartlepool were the most consistent and came through as overall winners with a pin fall of 8577 to Newcastle’s 8247. If every Newcastle bowler had just improved their score by 5 pins per game the trophy would have been ours. Nevertheless the top trio on the day trophies went to the Newcastle team of Stephen Wells, Chris Coffey and Chris Burtle with an 1863 series which is an average of 207 (with handicap) per person. The high scratch game trophy was awarded to Stephen Wells with a sound 215 game which is his first 200 game in league or tournament.

Other Newcastle triumphs were a maiden 200 from David Burtle with a 210 and a first class 202 bowled by Jordan Sargeant closely followed by Jennifer Cowley who bowled four consecutive strikes in a 190 game. Chris Coffey bowled well with a 155 highest game and a 128 scratch average on the day. Thomas Crow also turned in a fine performance averaging 151 during the morning. On lanes 9 and 10 Josh Summers averaged 98 which is 23 pins above his average, well done Josh. With two weeks to go Chris Burtle is the leader in the Bowler of the Month mainly due to an impressive 160 average this month.

The next tournament is scheduled to be held with Washington on 21st June at Washington.

The results of last weeks raffle along with a video of the draw are now available here.
